In September 2022, a member of the hacking group Lapsus$ breached Rockstar Games’ internal systems and posted roughly 90 clips of early GTA VI development footage, along with source code, to the GTAForums community. Rockstar confirmed at the time that the breach and the leaked material were genuine, calling it a network intrusion, and stated the incident would not affect development plans for the game.
The individual responsible, Arion Kurtaj, was later found by a UK court to have committed the offenses; due to being ruled unfit to stand trial, he was ordered detained indefinitely in a secure hospital rather than sentenced to a conventional prison term. A second, younger individual involved received an 18-month youth rehabilitation order. Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two Interactive stated the incident cost the company approximately $5 million.
This entry’s status is marked Confirmed because the breach itself, the authenticity of the leaked footage, and the legal outcome are all matters of public record — not because the leaked footage represented final, shipped game content.
